Recommended by a friend who grew up speaking Russian: this is one of a best-selling series that I'd never heard of.
It's a solid potboiler / detective mystery, set in late 19th century Russia... and then hopskipping thru Europe. It's a fun read, and one that could have copied its structure from a modern TV spy show like Alias. Fun!
