A novella in the same fictional universe as A Master of Djinn, which was way better. A shorter story with the similar structure: there's an otherworldly problem, and a pair of detectives from the Magic Cops team up to crack the case. The incredible world building of steampunk/magic/Cairo is sort of here, but really tons better in the full Djinn novel.
