Ronia, the Robber's Daughter
Notes
It's a Romeo & Juliet-lite, set within Robin Hood, by way of a magical Swedish mountain forest. There are menacing harpies, and truculent-but-doting fathers, and rivers and rumphobs.

My kids love the Pippi books, also written by Lindgren, and my wife read Ronia as a kid and loved it. It's really lovely; serious and fun and the best kind of children's coming-of-age fair tale. I read it with the kids, and I certainly got choked up a few times.
