Auralia's Colors
Notes
And it's good! Like most people said, it takes about half of the first novel, Auralia's Colors, to get really moving, but it's a compelling read. What seemed at first sort of a constrained environment - almost fable-like in its simplicity - opens up into a richly imagined, generous story.

Another recommendation, this one from pretty much everybody that works at the International Arts Movement in NYC. I blew them off (YA Fantasy doesn't usually light my fire) until I heard the author speak at a conference. Wow! Even though his lecture was on the moviegoing experience, I was so impressed that I immediately bought the novels in this series.
