A giant portal fantasy book from Jeff Vandermeer? That's maybe a little YA? And has talking animals? Sounds right up my alley. BUT I couldn't get past some typical VDM stuff: weird sentence structures, and I REALLY was not into half of the book where Aleister Crowley (not that one, but kind of, from a parallel universe) is a whiny magic dictator. Gave up 200 pages in, I think.
